Policy
Energy: We believe petroleum is, and will be this country's primary energy source for the foreseeable future. It is common sense for us to continue to purchase petroleum from the cheapest sources while we develop our own energy reserves to eliminate our dependence on foreign sources of energy.
The United States has the resources to create its own fuel. For example, the largest domestic resource is oil shale, found in parts of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming in the Green River Formation. According to estimates, this reserve has over a trillion barrels of oil, with 800 billion barrels fully recoverable, or three times the current oil reserves as Saudi Arabia.
In addition, we recognize that achieving energy independence will require using less petroleum and developing other viable energy sources. We support energy policy that:
We support efforts to eliminate federal government requirements for the multi-blending of gasoline unless they are implemented in a way that preserves consumer choice. Government mandated multi-blending reduces supply and drives up gasoline cost at the pump. (see GAO Gasoline Blend Report (00001803).PDF and The Real Culprit of Our Woes)
- Reduces our dependency on foreign fuel sources
- Creates tens of thousands of jobs
- Increases national fuel supply
- Decreases fuel cost
We believe the production of ethanol, an energy source that requires
more energy to produce than it provides, does not make economic or energy sense. (see Ethanol Study and New York Times )
Ethanol: The Inconvenient Truth
In addition, we believe the federal government should not engage in socialist style economic planning by mandating and/or subsidizing ethanol production. This planned economy approach to our energy challenges is doomed to create unintended consequences like increases in food prices and inhibits the markets ability to achieve balance.
We support reducing the regulatory requirements that are suppressing efforts to expand the petroleum refining capacity within the United States.
We support reducing the regulatory requirements that are inhibiting efforts to expand the construction of nuclear power plants according to the electric energy demands across the country.
The market and the capitalist system should dictate which alternative energy sources are ultimately most viable.
Government intervention in determining which fuel sources are viable is neither productive nor efficient, and can be detrimental as in the promotion of ethanol. We believe Americans will recognize and embrace common
sense solutions such as hybrid cars.
When you are sitting in traffic or at a red light, it makes sense that the gasoline
engine turns off. In stopped traffic, the batteries in hybrid cars supply power to the air conditioning, heating
systems and internal electrical accessories. The gasoline engine simply shuts down!
Current economic needs demand that we begin to look into consumer driven energy alternatives like:
Health Care: Congress has already done something brilliant by creating tax advantages for Health Savings Accounts tied to High Deductible Health Plans. Unfortunately, they stopped short of making Health Saving Accounts (HSA) the universal method for providing health care insurance to all Americans.
Health Savings Accounts with High Deductible Health Plans give consumers renewed power over health care decisions and make everyone responsible for controlling health care costs.
Health Care is a privilege, it is not a right. Providing the highest quality, most efficiently delivered health care services can be answered by the free market in the United States. The Health Savings Account puts the power into the hands of the user of the health care services.
- Premiums Must Be Paid for by Individual
- HSA must be funded privately (not by the government)
- Payment for services shall made directly to doctor or service provider
- All establishments must post medical inspection placard (Grade A - C) These inspections should be conducted by a consumer driven private enterprise rather than another government bureaucracy.
